Ando Project

    What fills the space?

How does the space affect people?

When does the space become alive?

The questions arise from a study of Ando Tadao's work, particularly his Church of Light, which exemplifies a minimalist approach to architecture that conveys profound messages through essential forms and materials. Departing from conventional church design, Ando emphasizes the interplay of light and space to explore the relationship between humanity and Christianity. By prioritizing simplicity and using natural light sources, the Church of Light encourages a contemplative atmosphere where individuals can engage deeply with their spirituality.

Central to Ando's design philosophy is space as a medium for emotional and spiritual experience. Literary and symbolic light fills the church, symbolizing hope and divine presence. This deliberate use of light and form shapes the environment within the church, evoking introspection and fostering a sense of connection with the sacred. The starkness of the concrete walls and the absence of ornamental distractions further enhance this focus, allowing visitors to immerse themselves fully in their prayers, confessions, and reflections.

Ultimately, the vitality of the space emerges from the interaction between its architectural elements and the individuals who inhabit it. The Church of Light illustrates how architectural design can transcend traditional aesthetics to influence human emotions and spiritual engagement profoundly. By stripping away non-essential elements, Ando Tadao creates a space that speaks eloquently to the essence of religious experience, inviting contemplation and personal introspection.
